- Call the Lewis County Sheriff's Office at (931) 796-5096. Ask whether the named person physically left the jail and whether the entry says community release or transfer.
- Request the existing booking-and-release sheet or movement entry. Include a narrow date range and ask for departure time, type, authority, destination, and case number.
- Contact the Circuit Court Clerk for the order or disposition. Search both General Sessions and Criminal or Circuit stages when a felony may have been bound over.
- Use TDOC, BOP, ICE, or federal court records only when the local entry points to that receiving system.

Ask the jail to distinguish “released to the community” from “released to another agency.” Both can remove a name from local custody.

Ask for existing records, not a new analysis. Useful requested fields include full name, booking number, booking date and time, arresting agency, charge, bond, custody movements, actual departure date and time, release type or authority, destination, court case number, and a releasable booking photograph. If only a date is supplied, follow up for type and destination.
Lewis County Jail Custody Snapshot
Lewis County Jail is a county facility, not a state prison. TDOC monthly jail reports provide point-in-time snapshots supplied through the jail-report process. The January 31, 2025 report listed 92 people against 47 beds. The March 31, 2025 report listed 89 people against 145 beds. Those figures show a sharp capacity change while the reported population stayed close.

Request Lewis County Release Records
Tennessee Code § 10-7-503 governs access to state, county, and municipal records. The Office of Open Records Counsel explains that official photographs and electronic materials can be public records, subject to exemptions. Tennessee citizens hold the statutory inspection and copy right. An agency may assist others voluntarily.
Inspection is ordinarily free and ordinarily does not require a written request. Copies may require a written form and reasonable fees under the custodian's policy. Ask for electronic copies and an estimate before charged work. The records custodian can require enough detail to locate the record, but need not create a custom 72-hour list, calculate a release date, or answer a legal question.
A useful request names the person and a narrow booking range, then seeks the booking-and-release sheet and corresponding movement entry. Ask for release or departure date and time, type, authority, transfer destination, and case number. Request the booking photograph separately if needed. If the office withholds part, ask it to cite the legal basis and release any severable part.

Lewis County Release Court Trail
The Lewis County Circuit Court Clerk at 29 West Main Street keeps General Sessions and Circuit records. The local process can create a two-stage file. A criminal defendant first has a General Sessions event. A felony can later be bound over, after which Criminal Court notice follows. Searching only one stage may miss the controlling order.
Call (931) 796-3724 or email `barbara.hinson@tncourts.gov`. The office lists weekday hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Current posted copy charges are $0.50 per page, with certified copies at $5.00 plus the per-page charge. Confirm costs before ordering.
Ask for the docket or minutes, final disposition, judgment, sentencing order, dismissal or nolle prosequi entry, bond or release order, probation or revocation order, jail-credit entry, amended order, and any later satisfaction or discharge entry. A bond order may leave the case open. Completion of confinement may leave probation. The jail entry and court record must be read together.
Lewis County Jail Capacity Change
A long-running local renovation and addition process gives context to the early 2025 capacity shift. A 2020 Lewis County Herald report traced project planning to an earlier architectural contract and discussed proposed design work. That local reporting is useful history, but it does not prove current operating details.
Later TDOC snapshots are the stronger operational source. They support a transition from 47 reported beds in January to 145 in March. The evidence does not establish the exact opening date or say whether every change came from construction rather than reporting revisions. It should not be converted into a release statistic.
Capacity also does not answer whether one person was released. Use it only to understand the facility. Person-level confirmation still comes from the Lewis County Jail release entry and the relevant court order.
Lewis County Jail Transfer Searches
A transfer entry changes the next search. If TDOC received the person, use the Felony Offender Information Lookup after state intake. FOIL covers current and former TDOC felony offenders, not all county bookings. Read status and location together. A community supervision office is not a prison, while Parole or Probation means the person remains under state supervision.
If the record names USMS, federal, or ICE, treat that as continuing custody until the receiving system says otherwise. The BOP locator covers sentenced federal prisoners, generally from 1982 forward. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” ends BOP custody only. ICE's locator is mainly a current detention tool, and a no-result does not prove community release. USMS has no matching public historical release locator, so the federal court docket may be needed.
No TDOC prison, BOP institution, ICE detention center, or USMS detention site was verified within Lewis County. These are conditional follow-up routes for an actual transfer, not extra local facilities. A person moved from Lewis County Jail may be housed far outside the county.
That distinction keeps the Lewis County release and transfer trail accurate when a local departure points toward later state or federal custody records.
